Biographical / Historical Note
Spencer Sargeant Large (1887-1967) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as an Infantry officer during World War I, and was wounded in France in 1918. His nickname was "Meadles".
Summary
Four drawings in pencil and pen and ink by Spencer Sargeant Large, circa 1900-1910. The drawings depict: a humorous self-portrait showing Large lounging in a hammock on a porch, captioned: "Meadles is a suburban-ite, and loves holidays and Sundays"; another humorous self-portrait showing Large standing trouserless while holding a pair of trousers in a room with a dressing table, captioned: "Meadles doing his long-distance act, or, tramping through the Paddy rondacks"; a sailboat; and a map of Africa. Accompanied by a brief note about Large by an unidentified source.
