Biographical / Historical Note
Amy Mabel Fanshawe Royle was born on March 4, 1863 in Belfast, Ireland. In 1887, she married James Cavan (1856-1911), with whom she had three children: Sylvia Cavan (1888-1962); Phillip Charles Cavan (born 1889); Mabel Cavan (1890-1928).
Summary
Manuscript alphabet book likely by Amy Mabel Fanshawe Royle for one or more of her children, possibly Mabel, with watercolor drawings for the letters of the alphabet, each accompanied by a short line of verse. The drawings and verse depict and name family members, pets, and servants.
The alphabet book is accompanied by a dance card, letter, and envelope. The dance card includes a program of 18 dances and four supper dances with no entries written on the corresponding page of engagements. "Eaton Mascott Hall. November 3rd, 1908" is printed on the front of the dance card with an embossed motto and cross. The original pencil is attached to the back of the dance card with a white, twisted, silk chord. The letter and envelope appear to be stationary from The Alexandra Hotel, Hyde Park Corner, W.W. and are addressed to "Mrs F. Royle" [i.e. Amy Mabel Fanshawe Royle]. The typed letter, dated "November 20th/18," is signed by Geo[rge] Hurst, Manager of The Alexandra Hotel and describes the details and cost of the accommodation reserved for Mrs F. Royle.
