Biographical / Historical Note
Osage County is the largest county by area in Oklahoma and is named for and home to the Osage Nation. All subsurface minerals in the county, including oil, are owned by the Osage Nation and held in trust for them by the Federal Government.
Phillips Petroleum Company was an American oil company incorporated in 1917 that expanded into petroleum refining, marketing and transportation, natural gas gathering and the chemicals sectors. It also established many subsidiary companies, including the Standish Oil Company. In 2002, Phillips Petroleum Company merged with Conoco Inc. to form ConocoPhillips.
Otis C. Shrout (1886-1969) was a photographer and sole proprietor of the Shrout Photo Company at Wichita, Kansas, approximately 1913-1929, as well as a field representative for the Mid- Continent Banker approximately 1941-1963.
Archie D. Turley (1893-1951) was a photographer at Wichita, Kansas, 1917-1926, and Sapulpa, Oklahoma, 1926-1951.

Two panoramic photographs created by Otis C. Shrout document operations of the Phillips Petroleum Company. The prints possess discrete inscribed titles in the negatives that include " Phillips Petroleum Co." as well as one with an additional title, "In the Osage Oil Fields." The images include unidentified company towns and nearby petroleum fields with oil well drilling rigs and wooden oil tanks.
One panoramic photograph created by Archie D. Turley and with a title inscribed in the negative, "Webb City, Okla., Looking North," documents Webb City, Oklahoma, and includes oil well drilling rigs operated by the Phillips Petroleum Company interspersed among residential and commercial buildings.
One panoramic photograph without a title and an unidentified creator depicts a company town and adjacent petroleum fields with oil well drilling rigs and wooden oil tanks as well as a refinery. The image may document the operations of the Standish Oil Company.
