Biographical / Historical Note
Sir Robert Gardiner (1781-1864) was a general in the British Army, Master Gunner, St James's Park, and Governor of Gibraltar, 1848-1855. He married Caroline Mary MacLeod (1784-1876) in 1816 and their son Lynedoch Gardiner (1820-1897) was a general in the British Army.
Summary
Collection of letters, notes, and documents written and received by members of the Gardiner family. Includes letters and documents pertaining to British foreign relations with Spain while Sir Robert Gardiner served as Governor of Gibraltar; letters addressed to Sir Robert Gardiner discussing religion; and condolence cards received by Caroline Mary MacLeod and Lynedoch Gardiner upon the death of Sir Robert Gardiner. Also includes a manuscript notebook belonging to Caroline Mary MacLeod containing financial notes; an architectural drawing with manuscript caption "my apartment in the Tower Pavillion Brighton"; and a printed pamphlet from the Charity Organisation Society of London, containing a list of the district committees and their mode of operation.
