Biographical / Historical Note
Philip Bewer Daghlian was an American educator and editor. He was born in Aintab (Gaziantep), Turkey, on April 25, 1915, and moved to the United States in 1920. He earned B.A. (1936) and Ph.D. (1941) degrees from Yale University, and married Agatha McGuire (1914-1993) in 1942. After graduation he worked as an editor on the Yale Edition of Walpole's Correspondence and taught at Yale (1941-1943) and the University of Rochester (1943-1946), before spending the majority of his career on the faculty of Indiana University. Daghlian died in Hilliard, Ohio, on November 17, 1991.
Summary
The papers document Philip Daghlian's planned edition of poems by the English author and antiquarian Horace Walpole (1717-1797), a project he began in 1948 at the invitation of Walpole editor and collector W. S. Lewis, and abandoned in 1959. The collection consists of various lists, Daghlian's notes on methodology, transcriptions of Walpole's poems, headnote essays, and footnotes, all annotated and further edited by Lewis. In 1964, Daghlian turned his files over to Lewis in the hope that another scholar would complete the work.
