Biographical / Historical Note
Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884) entered Yale College in 1825 but left in 1827 before completing his course of study. He later served as a United States Senator from Louisiana from 1853 to 1861 and as a Cabinet officer of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. Benjamin left for the United Kingdom and became an English barrister following the end of the American Civil War.
While a senator, Benjamin had an interest in strengthening trade connections between New Orleans, Louisiana, and California and promoted a project to build a railroad. Through his relations with French diplomat Alphonse Dubois de Saligny (1809-1888), Benjamin sought to secure land in Galveston, Texas, as well as the financial support of the French Emperor.
