Biographical / Historical Note
Conway P. Wing (1809-1889) was an American minister and abolitionist. In 1840, Wing traveled to Saint Croix for health reasons.
Summary
Autograph letter, signed, from Conway P. Wing to his wife, Prudence M. Wing, discussing social conditions and politics in the Danish West Indies. Wing describes seeing enslaved men and women working on a plantation; a Spanish slave ship being seized by the British; and enslaved children being removed from the seized slave ship. Wing also discusses the antislavery movement, including the work of William Lloyd Garrison and the Danish government enacting gradual emancipation in Saint Croix.
