Summary
Volume, signed, containing typescript copies of letters read by Ralph Henry Gabriel, 1st Lieutenant, United States Army 304th Infantry, while stationed at Saint-Amand-Montrond as part of his censorship duty during World War I. As noted on the first page, “Practically all of these letters were written by soldiers passing through this camp on their way to combat division at the front. Most of them were replacements from the United States and had only been in France but a short time [...] The letters were copied for the purpose of preserving the point of view and general mental characteristics of the American private soldiers of the World War.” Gabriel has omitted sender names.
