Biographical / Historical Note
Joseph Marshall Flint (1872-1844) graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1900. He later took a full-time professorship in surgery at Yale Medical School. In 1915, Flint went to France to work in a hospital in Passy. During World War I, he proposed and organized the first United States mobile medical unit, the Yale Mobile Unit. This unit was staffed and financed by Yale and was first established at Base Hospital 39 in Limoges before heading to the front.
