Biographical / Historical Note
Joshua Mersereau (1728-1804) was part of the Mersereau Ring, a spy ring operating throughout the New Brunswick and New York regions during the American Revolution. The ring gathered intelligence on British military activity. During the war, Mersereau served as a Representative for Richmond County with the Provincial Assembly of New York State. He also served as Deputy Commissary of prisoners. Following the war, he and his family moved to Tioga County where he became a surrogate judge.
