Jean Genet (1910-1986) was a French author.
George Jackson (1941-1971) was a Black American author and prison activist. He was killed by a guard at San Quentin Prison in California.
Summary
The collection consists chiefly of papers relating to Jean Genet's essay and appeal in support of George Jackson, and other material relating to Genet's support of Black American activists. Material relating to the production of Genet's statements, "Pour George Jackson" and "Appel pour un comité de soutien aux militants politiques noirs emprisonnés", written in support of George Jackson, John Clutchette, and Fleeta Drumgo, includes: manuscript and typescript drafts with corrections; layouts; printed proofs with autograph corrections; and printed copies. Also included are lists of persons contacted as part of the appeal, along with circa 300 signed copies of the appeal and letters of support returned to Paule Thévenin. Additional items in the collection include: material relating to Genet's preface for L'Assassinat de George Jackson (Paris : Gallimard, 1971); a typescript essay, with autograph corrections, by Thévenin, on George Jackson and his letters from prison; a typescript essay, by an unidentified author, on the deaths of George Jackson and his brother Jonathan; a photocopy of Jean Thibaudeau's essay, "George Jackson et la Revolution"; a letter to Genet from Comité d'action et d'information pour la défense des droits des Noirs Américains, suggesting the coordination of their actions relating to Angela Davis and the Black Panthers; copies of a printed appeal for Angela Davis, by the Comité national pour la défense et la liberation de Angela Davis; a typescript letter, signed, by Morris N. Placere, along with a photocopy of an article by him from November 20, 1974; and a reproduction of Jacques Derrida's letter to Genet, "Lettre a Jean Genet (Fragments) le 20 Août 1971".
