Summary
Autograph manuscript notebook containing a diary of a trip Adams and his family took from the United States to England, September 17-October 7, 1935. In the first section of the notebook, Adams writes about life aboard ship on the transatlantic voyage to England, including the books he reads on the voyage. The remaining sections discuss Adams's activities in London, including social engagements, visiting museums and other tourist sites, and visiting booksellers and bookshops. Adams writes at greater length on a visit with Thomas James Wise, including about his collection of books and manuscripts and his criminal activities; and about multiple visits with Florence Emily Hardy, Thomas Hardy's widow, at her house Max Gate in Dorset. Also included in the notebook are other writings, including notes on Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and socialism. Laid in to the notebook are a newspaper clipping and an autograph manuscript letter, signed, from an unidentified sender at Stour House, Sandwich, Kent.
