Biographical / Historical Note
Frederick Temple Blackwood, Marquis of Dufferin and Ava (1826-1902) was a British public servant and diplomat. He served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1884-1888.
George Augustus Sala (1828-1895) was a British author and journalist.
Summary
Autograph manuscript letter, signed, inviting Sala to lunch and to view a diplomatic reception of Indian visitors. Sala annotated the letter multiple times, including with notes about attending the lunch and seeing his host receive a local dignitary and her granddaughter; his health and travels; and a draft of a letter to Mrs. Amelia Cherry Skirrow in which he disparages his Calcutta hotel and its staff, describes a friend removing him from the hotel, and says that he will be traveling on to Marseille, France. Accompanied by a woodburytype portrait of Sala by photographers Locke and Whitfield.
