Biographical / Historical Note
Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) was a commodore of the United States Navy and commander of the East India Squadron.
Summary
Autograph manuscript letter, signed, from Matthew Calbraith Perry. The first part of the letter is addressed to his son-in-law August Belmont, Sr. and discusses the health of his squadron; plans to sail to Hong Kong; and his intent to purchase decorative objects in China and Japan. Perry also says that two members of his squadron have been buried at the Port of Hakodate, Japan. The second part of the letter is addressed to his daughter Isabella Perry and describes how he would like to display his decorative objects.
