Biographical / Historical Note
Jules Barbier (1825-1901) was a French author and librettist.
Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894) was a Russian pianist, composer, and conductor.
E. Gérard et Cie was a French music publisher, founded in 1859 in Paris by Édouard Gerard.
The opera Néron, based on the life of the Roman emperor Nero, was commissioned by Émile Perrin and the Paris Opéra in the 1860s. The score was composed by Anton Rubinstein in 1875-1876, and Jules Barbier wrote the libretto. The opera premiered in Hamburg in 1879.
