Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) was an English painter and diarist.
Summary
Autograph manuscript letter, signed, to Sir Charles Lock Eastlake in Rome, Italy. The letter discusses numerous topics, including: Eastlake's experiences living in Rome; how the British taste in art differs according to social class; students and exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts in London; other artists, including David Wilkie and Antonio Canova; and more. Haydon also writes about the experience of seeing the newly displayed Parthenon Marbles at the British Museum; discusses giving a tour of them to Nicholas I, future Emperor of Russia; and details the various plaster casts being made of the sculptures. Included on the sheet is a pen and ink sketch of the sculptures depicting Helios and two horses rising from the sea, which are part of the East pediment sculpture group. Accompanied by a copy of Sotheby's auction catalog description.
