本书以明代宮廷祭祀戏剧为研究对象,通过精读"脉望馆抄校本古今杂剧"所收明代内府本,藩王创作剧本,以及"盛世新声","词林摘艳","雍熙乐府","大明春"这四套明代宮廷曲本,对其中所包含的各种祭祀成分进行分类研究,分析其产生的原因,受祭祀仪式的影响和变化等;对宮廷祭祀戏剧的演出情况进行研究,包括演出机构和人员,演出中的仪式性以及与民间相关,贯穿古今,至今存活的祭祀戏剧案例进行研究,通过个案分析进行宮廷与民间祭祀戏剧的对比,进而提出宮廷祭祀戏剧对中国戏曲发展存在重要影响这一主要观点.
