Biographical / Historical Note
Diane Griffin Crowder (1948-) was professor of French and women's studies at Cornell College, Iowa, where she cofounded an LGBT student group in 1978 and the women's studies program in 1984. Crowder has written extensively on the works and influence of Monique Wittig.
Monique Wittig (1935-2003) was a French writer and lesbian feminist theorist. She was survived by her partner Sande Zeig, an American filmmaker.
Summary
The collection chiefly consists of Diane Griffin Crowder's research files relating to Monique Wittig, and includes manuscript, printed, and audiovisual materials. Includes: autograph manuscript and typescript correspondence between Crowder, Wittig, and Wittig's partner Sande Zeig concerning professional and personal matters; Crowder's notes from phone conversations with Wittig in 1989 and 1998; drafts of a bibliography of works by and about Wittig; Crowder's teaching notes on Wittig; drafts of essays by Crowder about Wittig; two photographs of Wittig by unidentified photographers; and photocopies of articles and reviews relating to Wittig by various authors, many with annotations by Crowder. Also includes copies of works by Wittig, including: a mimeograph typescript of The Constant Journey (1981); and photocopies of essays and short stories. The collection also includes two audio recordings of Wittig by Crowder: "One is Not Born a Woman", a lecture given at Cornell College in 1979; and "Les Mots", recorded in New York circa 1982. The recordings are on audiocassette and CD.
