In this episode, Bill Moyers spends several weeks with two therapists who are treating patients without any drugs or surgery. Jon Kabat-Zinn runs a stress reduction clinic in the middle of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, which involves Eastern meditation techniques. And at the Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, California, Dr. David Spiegal is helping a group of women with metastatic breast cancer speak to each other about their experiences - and extending their lives as a result. Demystifying Eastern meditation, Kabat-Zinn says, "What meditation is really about is looking deeply into the chatter of the mind and becoming more aware of its patterns." Emphasizing the need to bring the mind to stillness, he says, "If you hope to really grow in strength and wisdom and bring healing into your life, you have to at some point come to the realization that this moment is precious. And not only precious, but it's wonderful, even if you're in pain, in this moment."
