Manuscript notebook with pre-printed page numbers and ruled paper containing minutes of the Staunton District School Board and a ledger of teacher salaries. Pages 1 to 82 contain the minutes of school board meetings between 1903 and 1922. Pages 106 to 152 record the names and salaries of teachers between 1900 and 1922; each year's list of teachers is divided into "White" and "Colored" sections. The minutes cover topics including the building or expansion of schools and appropriation of funds; many of the board's meetings included discussions relating to Black schools.
Manuscript annotations on interior covers and end papers. Laid in: autograph note, signed "AB Coates," regarding a contract to build a proposed new school (between pages 54 and 55); a Department of Health receipt for reimbursement of travel expenses to W.G. Brumfield, dated 1914 April 10 (inside front cover); and a 1928 September 29 death certificate for an 85-year-old Black man named Patrick Younger (inside front cover). Pages numbered 83 to 100 and 105 are blank, and pages 101 to 104 have been torn out. Half bound with maroon leather on the spine and corners and black cloth boards. The front cover bears traces of a title written in manuscript in white.
