Summary
"For some time now, we have seen a great revival of interest in Moondog's unusual work. In France, the enthusiast Amaury Cornut has dedicated a website and a book to ""The Viking of 6th Avenue,"" while elsewhere, musicians as different as Damon Albarn, Philip Glass, and Debbie Harry sing his praises. And it's excellent news that we are far from having delimited the blind composer's protean art. Maybe because his seemingly legendary biography (childhood on Native American reservations, loss of sight in a dynamite accident, life of a ""divine tramp"") and his outrageous style (Viking helmet, bard's beard, monk's clothing) have often taken the spotlight over his visionary mind, he who has woven unheard-of relationships between classical music, jazz, and the echoes of the depths of the ages. In 1992, Moondog was 76 years old and had just recorded Elpmas (1991), a manifesto for the respect of nature and the Aboriginal people. This concert, recorded in Stuttgart with The London Saxophonic, made up entirely of (very) young saxophonists, overlooks that record to draw on his older works (""Heath On The Heather,"" ""Dog Trot"") and on some unreleased works that would be recorded with the same group two years later (the album *Sax Pax For A Sax*, 1994). Led by the huge drum of the master, who even bends down to beat the rhythm on the floor, this concert is a priceless document for fans of the unclassifiable artist whose aura is stronger than ever today.
