Summary
"Emerging from between the lines of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Fairy Queen is a goofy masterpiece from Britain's baroque star, Henry Purcell. Vox Luminis' intimate production is simple, elegant and a surprising rarity in the opera scene. This unintentional collaboration between Britain's most celebrated playwright and its most original composer is a standout work in the English opera repertoire. In keeping with the court masque tradition, the music is written to entertain, metaphorically recounting the plot of the play. Characters such as the drunken poet contrast with the melancholic narrator in a subtle dramatization of the plot allowing the theatrical genius of Purcell's music to take center-stage. Composed just before his untimely death at 35 years old, Purcell's work is jovial and youthful and a great example of the originality that made him famous in Britain and in Europe. Kim Hunter".
