Summary
"In this film by Josselin Carré, shot at Dynamo Pantin as part of the 2015 Banlieues Blues Festival, Antonin Leymarie's group joins forces with the inimitable Thomas de Pourquery in a unique musical offering. The scene opens onto Leymarie (co-founder of the Surnatural Orchestra) and his kit, captured sporadically by dynamic spotlights. The camera zooms in on the minor details: a pedal trembling on the skin of a bass drum, a gong-style stick skating across the surface of a cymbal. These shots act as a background, while images of the band's name are superimposed on top. We read the large letters - Magnetic Ensemble - before an establishing shot of the group as a whole, chiming together at close quarters. They play in a deliberate circle formation, designed for unison and symbiosis, hitting wooden rims, plucking piano strings and utilizing any other implement in the space - this group wont be curtailed by the 'traditional' uses of their instruments. Thomas Veyssière's light show is special here: a central LED unit runs through the players like piping, pulsating with the electricity that shoots along it, mimicking the rhythm of the music. Once the band is spent after nearly fifty minutes, Carré thrusts us into a new space with a quick cut. We see an unconventional epilogue, one in which Leymarie is joined by Aloïse Sauvage, a dancer in red who personifies the Magnetic Ensemble's concept album title: *Dancing Alone*. She moves with the skittering intricacy of Leymarie's kit before one of the drums topples to the floor and the screen fades to black. Rowan Standish-Hayes".
