Summary
"There are few drummers who could honor the immortal Art Blakey with the authority and majesty he deserves than Ralph Peterson. In charge of an all-star ensemble of Blakey alumni, Peterson calls forth the memory of ""Buhania,"" the legendary stylist and bandleader who was one of the leading architects of hard bop during the Fifties and Sixties. A partial rollcall of the famous players who graduated from the Jazz Messengers-Blakey's unofficial jazz finishing school- includes Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton and Bobby Timmons. The concert's repertoire is strictly prime Blakey material. Included are such gems as Wayne Shorter's ""One by One"" and ""This Is for Albert""; Benny Golson's ""Along Came Betty""; Walton's ""One the Ginza,"" and ""Pensativa"" by composer Clare Fischer. And, of course, no Blakey tribute would be complete without Bobby Timmon's ""Moanin',"" perhaps the signature tune of the Jazz Messengers. Here, this conglomerate of late edition Messengers digs into beloved repertoire with a passion that displays their admiration and affection for their late leader. Peterson, for his part, suggests the intensity of Blakey without diminishing his own individuality. About the Messenger Legacy band Peterson has said, ""Every time I play the drums it is in tribute to Art, but I wanted to do something that goes beyond me, beyond any individual. I wanted to pay tribute in a way that was authentic, genuine, and meaningful not just to a few, but to every person he touched through his music."" At this stirring concert he surely succeeded. cSteve Futterman".
