Summary
"A leading figure of modern jazz, Randy Weston has frequently fed his works with African infusions. Among the essential opuses, take for example the illustrious Uhuru Afrika, the manifesto Music From The New African Nations, or even this meeting with the hypnotic Gnawa brotherhood. Guest of the last edition of the Ramatuelle Jazz festival, the keyboardist and close friend Cheick Tidiane Seck naturally echoes this approach. Extension of the album Timbuktu-The Music Of Randy Weston, the performance of the Black Buddha generates a confusing richness. One thinks of the opening track and its bewitching chords; of "Timbuktu," a title co-signed by Abd Al Malik; or his nod to Hank Jones, with whom Cheick Tidiane Seck has recorded in the past. Supported by an unstoppable band including the excellent Thomas Guei on percussion, the Malian musician also broadens the playing field with "Bisso" and then with the unifying "Soul Makossa," two pieces composed by the late Manu Dibango. This tribute to the greats ends in a bubbling improvisation, with heady saxophone and in tune keyboards. Vincent Caffiaux".
