Summary
"The London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, performs Scherzo Capriccioso and the second act of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. Contrary to what its name might suggest, the Scherzo Capriccioso is by no means a joyous piece. It is a 14-minute reflection on the conception and writing of music. Most likely composed during the painful period that Dvořák would have gone through after the death of his mother in 1882, this piece saw the light of day a year later in Prague and marked the beginning of a period of maturity for the composer. The music for the ballet The Nutcracker was imagined in 1892 in Saint Petersburg by Tchaikovsky, inspired by Hoffmann's tale. Without the gloom of the first act, this performance gives way to the luminous interplay of perceptions - between reality and dream - of the second. Tchaikovsky offers us an anthology of pieces that have become as famous in the eyes of classical music fans as the greatest jazz standards (including the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," the "Chinese" dance, and the cult "Waltz of the Flowers.") And this is due both to their complexity and their creativity: he is thus the first to use the celesta (the small keyboard of the percussion family with its characteristic magical sound) and to play with the noisy din of the brass and the grotesqueness of the woodwinds. This program around Late Romanticism brings us closer to the sweet childhood memories of Dvořák and the fantasy of Tchaikovsky, who will not fail to take you there in turn. Alissa Polonskaya".
