"Éténèsh Wassie's voice intonations are immersed in the Ethiopian tradition, which the singer continuously transforms. The Punkt Festival is based on the concept of the live remix, where each concert is remixed live just after it has been performed for a new interpretation of the music that has just been played. By inviting Eténèsh Wassie, Jan Bang, festival co-director and sound engineer, called upon a powerful voice from Addis Ababa's azmaris. Born to a practicing Orthodox family, Eténèsh Wassie is familiar with the rituals that are sung, the traditional improvisational games, and the vocal jousting of the azmaribet in the capital's cabarets. She adds a unique inflection to this classic repertoire that she is able to set free from its heritage, accompanied by bassist Mathieu Sourisseau, whose musical touch serves as a harmonic pillar to the rising trance. The duo has been playing together since 2009 and their chemistry is obvious. The throaty voice sometimes rasps to the point of emitting a sharp cry that shakes the senses from their lethargy. It is matched by the squeals of strings that are scraped, overloaded, even scrubbed with a metallic sponge that transforms the bass into a rumbling, tumultuous blast. Together, they alternate a vibratory frenzy which is then intensely reworked by two Norwegian musicians and pioneers in remix, Audun Kleive on percussion and Jan Bang on sampler. Marion Paoli".
