Summary
"The veteran of top-notch bands such as Canned Heat and John Mayall's Bluebreakers, guitar phenom Walter Trout formed his own band in 1989 and crafted a career that has made him one of the blues most prolific personalities. He's been called by one journalist, "the ultimate supreme blues musician" of modern times. This rousing 2019 performance at Jazzwoche Burghausen in Germany captures Trout is fine form. His flame-throwing guitar work on the blues-rock "I Can Tell" opens the show, and he goes into the dirty blues depth on Jimmy Dawkins' slow 1997 tune, "Me, My Guitar and the Blues." It was covered by Trout on his 2019 hit album Survivor Blues that rose to the top of the Billboard Blues Chart. With his gritty vocals and his electrifying guitar solos, Trout rouses the crowd that cheers for more. The surprise guest of the evening is John Trout, Walter's son who delivers fleet-fingered guitar stretches himself. Dad introduces him to play the torrid song they co-wrote, "Do You Still See Me at All," that features terrific call-and-response playing and blues conversations in the father-son spotlight. Trout champions Mayall's funky groove of his 1969 tune "Nature's Disappearing" that the guitarist says is just as appropriate a song today as it was a half-century ago. The show ends with Trout calling for rock-n-roll and exhilarates with a rollicking take on "Bullfrog Blues." Toward the end of the evening he calls out to the audience for supporting organ donations, a cause that he and his wife work on-especially given that Trout was a recipient of a liver transplant after years of heavy drinking on the road. Based on his appearance at this show, he's fully recovered. Dan Ouellette".
