"In the 16th edition of the Nuits Sonores Festival in Lyon, France, there was a variety of cultural, artistic and urban music over the course of eight days. A particularly adventurous part of the 2018 festival included four ""A Day With"" events curated by noteworthy figures championing forward thinkers in the world of alternative electronics. In the laboratory of UK electronic music producer and DJ Daniel Avery, his first guest was Alessandro Cortini, best known for his longtime association with Nine Inch Nails in addition to his own alternative electronic solo side project SONOIO in Los Angeles. For Cortini's performance at Nuits Sonores, he told an electronic story with the help of video. The images were home movies of him growing up in Italy with conversations overheard at times. Performing in an intimate loft-like space with an enthralled crowd watching on, Cortini delivered a tale of mesmerizing sounds that were eerie and quite beautiful, electronically bending notes at times for effect. He revealed a romanticism of sorts with colorful and lyrical lines underscored by a repeated bass note. He expressed the power of the personal in a state of reflection and meditation. His short set was not about dance or shock, but about cutting-edge electronica programmed to move the heart. Dan Ouellette".
