Straight off the back of Follow the Sun, where El'Zabar's Ritual Trio were joined by singer Dwight Trible, the two entities reunite again for this 2014 concert at the Banlieues Bleues in Paris. On the album, as well as in concert, Trible's presence serves to push the already restless and adventurous character of the group into new dimensions. With space given to Trible's acrobatic stylings, El'Zabar is able to offer his own contributions to the dialogue, with the trio embarking on boundless jazz and afrocentric journeys underneath. Founded in the 1970s, the Ritual Trio sprung from a Chicago milieu that included the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Early on in the concert, which pauses to show El'Zabar being interviewed in crisp black and white, he describes the period as an "extraordinary example of collective humility," something that furthered great black music with spirits of inclusivity and freedom acting as the driving forces. Here, alongside Ari Brown on saxophone and keys and Junius Paul on bass, Trible and El'Zabar demonstrate these principles with a free-flowing infectiousness. It's an energy that bounces between cultures, blending the mbira and congos with double bass, free jazz sax and much, more. Rowan Standish Hayes.
