Summary
"Rachilde, known as 'Mademoiselle Baudelaire,' whose real name is Marguerite Eymery (1860/1953), has published more than sixty novels renowned for their modernity and their fin-de-siècle tone. If she knew the vagaries of posterity, victim of her scandalous dimension, she left a representative journey of French literature between 1880 and 1950. Famous and courted for at least three decades, she experienced the end of her career and life in the oblivion even as she continues to write without denying any of her opinions and her always singular way of apprehending the world. In 2023, his work falls into the public domain and the editorial world is working to rediscover original texts whose often subversive nature can relevantly question our time. Across the Channel and across the Atlantic, the academic world has already taken hold, particularly under the influence of gender studies , of a corpus which renews the romantic inspiration at the end of the 19th century and paves the way for the next. Because Rachilde is the author of novels which may have seemed both licentious and sufficiently complex not to go out of fashion and when literary history ranks her in the category of "minores", is it a question of reproaching her : topics that are too daring? too academic? a too flashy personal journey? relationships that are too showy and varied? too thunderous positions? We no longer know... In reality, Rachilde leaves the work of a free woman, nourished by her paradoxes if not her contradictions. This is why this volume, which brings together eighteen contributions, has chosen to focus on the following three main aspects: the conception of women, femininity and feminism developed by Rachilde in her various texts; their modernity between aesthetic and ethical debates or how Rachilde, through her fictions, her reports and her salon, tries to renew literary creation; finally, the critical reception of his works, through the influences suffered and exercised, and his literary friendships."
