Summary
This work investigates the urban history of the three Churches of Black Men that were erected in São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga (the village that developed as the state of São Paulo in the region known as Campos de Piratininga): the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Men, the Church of Our Lady of the Conception and Saint Ephigenia and the Church of São Benedito. Seen by the Church as devices to control the enslaved, the strategic appropriation that the black people made of these buildings corroborated for the foundation of important black strongholds in the urban plan of São Paulo, reason for the many territorial disputes. Using as methodology the crossing of manuscript and iconographic sources, the author seeks to develop a new narrative about these places of black Catholicism, pointing out the relevance of their implementations as one of the justifications for the expropriations that occurred in the post-abolition years.
