Summary
Case of Joseph Troup and his family, who were attacked by a mob because of his politics. His wife was knocked over by the butt of a gun and his son James Troup was shot dead, by a party of about 18 men. Affidavit in the case of W B Hill. State v Viney Scarlett (a woman who had hurled vulgar and abusive language at Mrs Livingston). State v George Hitch (a colored man). Articles of Agreement made by Haden J David with his freed slaves in 1865. Letters from the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands in 1866. Reports of racial violence and the whipping, robbing and killing of freed slaves in Henry county and the refusal of the civil authorities to do anything about it. This was reported to the Bureau by its agent, Mr Phillips, and in a long letter by Major-General Tilson, dated October 1866, describing the terrible atrocities in Henry county.
