Description: From the Lay Papers, volume II. Includes miscellaneous papers of Lay's family and descendants; a translation by Lay of a Chinese official document, and two translations by Sir Thomas Wade; miscellaneous personal papers; cuttings and extracts from various British and Chinese newspapers; deed of covenant between Lay and Messrs Emile Erlanger and Co. for the customs loan to the Japanese government in 1870; two copies of a memorandum regarding British policy towards Afghanistan, Russia and Persia 1873; draft of a pamphlet entitled 'Chinese History in Opium'; printed paper entitled 'Did Lord Elgin for Opium on China in 1858?' regarding an address Lay gave on the subject.
