Summary
Spence's anecdotes have been published several times. The Osborn edition of the Observations arranges them under three subject headings: anecdotes by or about Alexander Pope, remarks about other British subjects, and conversations and anecdotes from Spence's three continental tours. The last group is of great interest for study of the Grand Tour. Spence's sources and subjects are too numerous to list completely here but include some of the foremost writers and antiquarians in eighteenth-century Italy: Francesco Scipione, Marchese di Maffei; Francesco de' Ficoroni; Edward Holdsworth; James Grant; the unidentified Mr. T.; Antonio Cocchi; Tommaso Crudeli; Baron Philip von Stosch; Margaret Rolle, Lady Walpole; Sebastiano Bianchi; Rosalba Carriera; et al.
