Summary
The manuscript is an autograph draft of an essay later published by Joseph Spence in Remarks and Dissertations on Virgil by the late Mr Holdsworth, 1768. The text, a typical example of the topographical classicism practiced by Holdsworth, Spence, and many other scholars in Italy on the Grand Tour, recounts Holdsworth's efforts to determine the true location of the spring which is the setting for the Numa Pomilia-Egeria myth best known in the version given by Ovid (Metamorphoses Book XV). Holdsworth examines sites at Aricia, Porta Capena, and Caffarelli; his account contains evocative anecdotal descriptions of his visits as well as scholarly commentary.
