Summary
Grunge is very loud, very rebellious; lots of very heavy guitar and fuzz effects, but in terms of its recording techniques, it's very lo-fi; everything is stripped back, and really taken back to just the instruments. The lyrics tended to be about real life stuff, alienation; a kind of weariness at the world; a cynicism, but also a lot of humour. Grunge was the music of the underdog. There was no point aping glamour because there was no glamour in their lives, and it wasn't something that they could graduate to. So they would sit at home, play riffs, deep, big, huge riffs. Featuring clips of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots. Journalists/critics include Will Hodgkinson (The Times), Sunta Templeton (Radio X), John Aizlewood (Evening Standard).
