Summary
Description: This is a large chart on vellum, drawn on a plane scale, by Diego Homem in 1558; very highly finished and ornamented in gold and colour, with the arms of the respective sovereigns emblazoned on the various countries. The outlines of some of the coasts are laid down in gold. It was probably executed for Philip II during the lifetime of Mary, and is known as the 'Queen Mary Atlas'. The map shows the eastern coast of Africa, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the coast of India to Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari) and Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
