Summary
This production emphasised the erotic rather than comic aspects of the play. Viola (Jane Lapotaire) was a very boyish Cesario, hugged and fondled by a lolling Orsino (John Price). The physical relationships were highlighted in this production, so Antonio (Paul Moriarty) was clearly Sebastian s (Robert Lloyd) long-time lover. There was also a deliberate suggestion of sexual ambiguity seen in Orsino s wavering about which twin he preferred at the end. The back wall of designer William Dudley s bare set was dominated by the figure of Narcissus, Starring at his own image in a pool. All the characters were obsessed with their own reflections and were prone to self-deception, notably Nicol Williamson's Malvolio, his early scenes marked by his self-important speech, full of pauses.
