Summary
Capanema Maru is the result of 10 years of research by the author, architect and urban planner Sandra Branco Soares, who worked more than 20 years in the Departamento de Patrimônio Material, housed in the Palácio Gustavo Capanema (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The creation of the Ministry of Education by the government of Getúlio Vargas imposed the need of new headquarters. Minister Gustavo Capanema opened a public competition for the choice of the project planned. The construction of the building, inspired by the precepts of Le Corbusier, lasted eight years (from 1937 to 1945). The winning architects of the contest, a commission of young architects who had mostly not reached 30 and who had little experience, never saw their idea materialized. It was not only the scarce professional practice of the team led by Lúcio Costa -made up of future stars such as Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Reidy, Carlos Leão, Ernani Vasconcelos and Jorge Machado Moreira - but also the constant changes over the original project of Minister Capanema. Includes historic references on the tile panels and murals created by Cândido Portinari and the landscaping of Roberto Burle Marx, as well as shedding light on the work Mulher sentada by sculptor Adriana Janacópulos. The building also has creations by Bruno Giorgi and Celso Antonio.
