Summary
Description: Supreme Court decision to uphold the lowering of the voting age in Federal elections means that 11.5 million Americans between the age of 18 and 21 will be able to vote in the 1972 Presidential election. They will also be able to vote for Congressional candidates in that election as well as in any special elections to Congress after January 1st, 1971. However the Supreme Court ruled that Congress did not have the right to prescribe a minimum voting age in State and local elections. Election officials in most States will have to make separate arrangements for 18 year olds to vote for national officers, but not for State officers. In addition to lowering the minimum voting age, Congress in the same law extended to all States a ban on literacy tests for voting which previously applied to only certain Southern States. Report on the reapportionment of Congressional seats to reflect population shifts. Memorandum on the Deep South and the Democratic wins including George Wallace's overwhelming victory as Governor in Alabama. Reports on the South and changes in regard to Race and segregation in schools as well as the industrialisation of the South. Report on the Soviet Union's press coverage of the US elections. Text of President Nixon's remarks on the Elections. Report on the elections for Governor and Senator in New York. Governor Rockefeller standing against Arthur Joseph Goldberg. The three candidates for the Senate seat were Charles Goodell, Richard Ottinger and James Buckley.
