The present (second) part of the library was bought by the Marquis de Paulmy in 1786 and added to his library, which, thus enlarged, contained an unsurpassed collection of French and Italian literary and historical works from 1600-1780. At his death in 1787, his library passed to the Count d'Artois (afterwards Charles X) to whom it had previously been sold. It was confiscated in 1792, and in 1797, by decree of the Directoire, became the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal.
