Biographical / Historical Note
Rothwell, of Callaway County, Missouri, traveled to California in 1850, returned to Liberty, Missouri, and became a member of the faculty of William Jewell College.
Summary
The journal, letters, and guide describe Rothwell's trip across the Plains from Fulton, Missouri, to California, with his uncles Dr. W. E. Stephens and Capt. J. Price, and his brother-in-law J. P. Gibbs. They went by way of St. Joseph, Fort Kearney, the Platte, Fort Laramie, South Pass, Sublette's Cut-off, Hudspeth's Cut-off, the Humboldt and Carson, Hangtown, and the mines on Weber Creek. The last pages contain notes on mining. Rothwell sent his journal and guide back east to aid other emigrants.
