Charles Edward Rand ran the Bay Restaurant with William Cole, worked for Sim & Co., dealers in produce and grain, acted as agent for the Star Line Packets, and owned his own produce firm, Stevens, Rand, & Co.

The letters describe life in San Francisco; political activities, locally and nationally; the Vigilance Committee of 1856; the filibustering expeditions of William Walker and Henry A. Crabb into Sonora; the panic of the banking houses; fires; the murder of James King of William; the many immigrants;the arrival and departure of ships; squatters' rights; the Australian gold rush;trade; and many references to people from Massachusetts. With an ALS from Seth H. Wetherbee to Maj. Thomas Rand, 1856 Sep 4, concerning the upcoming trail of Charles Rand and an ALS from Thomas Rand to his brother Edward, 1856 Oct 19, summarizing the events surrounding the trial.
