George A. Thomas moved to California in 1850, and became a miner, forming a partnership with Thomas H. Chesley, and then with George A. Wood. He moved often; cities he lived in briefly include Nevada City, Mariposa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Columbia, and Gold Springs.
Summary
The papers consist of two letters, receipts, statements of account, tables, and a broadside. 1 ALS from George A. Thomas to his brother Charles, Dec. 31, 1850, from Benicia, California, with a description of Benicia,the ports of California, the vessels in port, and his plans to farm. The second letter is from Thomas H. Chesley to George A. Thomas, written from Columbia Nov. 13 (n.y.), describing mining for gold, his claims, his new partnership. The undated broadside is entitled, "Grand Complimentary Benefit, Given by the Citizens of Sonora to Signora Biscaccianti on Friday Evening Next, at the Methodist Episcopal Church, on Yaney Street," printed in Sonora by "Sonora Herald" print. The back of the broadside was used to record ledger entries for goods in pen and pencil.
With 6 pages of tables listing letters written home, indicating where written, the date, to whom, enclosures of gold, and if received, for the years 1850-1854. There are also 6 pages of tables of letters received for the same years, listing when they were dated, when they arrived, and from whom they were sent. With expense accounts and receipts for the mining partnerships Chesley & Co., Thomas & Chesley, and Wood & Thomas, 1853-1854, and a claim for land in Springfield signed by George A. Thomas and George A. Wood, June 9, 1853.
