The tape contains annual historical statistics on research and experimental development activities (R&D) in OECD member countries. The main aggregates are collected twice yearly and the detailed data every two years through international surveys. The data are then stored in the OECD Scientific, Technological and Industrial Indicators Division's S&T data base.
Data also includes annual historical statistics on the output result of S&T activities, i.e. patents and technology balance of payments. The patent data is comprised of annual World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) statistics, completed if necessary by the annual statistics of the European Patents Office (EPO) and the Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT).
The technology balance of payments data used comes from national sources. Totals are collected twice yearly through international surveys and the detailed data are collected via a survey every two years based on the Proposed standard method of compiling and interpreting technology balance of payments data-TBP manual, 1990.
The tape contains detailed statistics on R&D expenditures in million national currency and in million dollars at the fixed price levels and purchasing power parity (ppp) of 1985 and on R&D personnel in full-time equivalents. Statistics on research and experimental development expenditure are presented by sector of performance, source of funds, type of cost, type of activity and main field of science.
Personnel data are given by sector of employment, by occupation and/or by qualification and by main field of science. Data for research and experimental development in the Business Enterprise sector are also broken down by industry. Higher education and private non-profit sector data are given by field of science. Government budget appropriations or outlays on R&D are available by socio-economic objective.
