The second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II), conducted during the period 1976-1980, was designed to measure and monitor the nutritional status and health of the U.S. population aged 6 months through 74 years. Data were collected by means of a household questionnaire, medical histories, dietary questionnaires, a physical examination, spirometry trials, electrocardiograms, and body measurements.

It also included puertone audiometry, speech and allergy test, X-rays, a medication/vitamin usage questionnaire, a behavior questionnaire and laboratory analyses of blood and urine samples. Each file contains approximately 100 demographic variables, with the exception of the Model Gram and Nutrient Composition files which do not contain any demographics.

The demographic data include information on the type of residence and housing, composition of the household, vehicles, languages spoken, income sources and amounts, food stamps and commodity foods, employment, age, race and national amcestry, sex, education, marital status, veteran status and region of country.
