Biographical / Historical Note
Abel Bingham, born April 5, 1820, served as a missionary among Indians at Tonnawanda, New York (1822-1827) and Sault St. Marie, Michigan (1828-1855), and opened mission schools at each site. He married Hannah Brown in 1809 and had 5 children. He served in the War of 1812. He died in 1865.
Summary
The collection includes family correspondence, account books, journals, business letters and reports on the missionary activities of the Rev. Abel Bingham at the Tonnawanda Mission, New York (1822-1827) and Sault St. Marie, Michigan (1828-1855); also letters and diaries of his wife Hannah Bingham (8 diaries, 1827-1832, 1840-1844, 1853-1858), 2 diaries of Sophie Bingham (1850, 1851-1853) and other members of the family. Many papers and speeches of Angelina Bingham Gilbert, letters from John Claude Buchanan (Sophie's husband), including his letters while he was serving in the 8th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War.
