Summary
The present set of proof impressions includes 54 of the 67 maps included in John Speed's The theatre of the empire of Great Britaine, 1611 [1612], including the map of the British Isles and maps of 54 counties. In the present set, the map of Chester differs from that in the published Theatre. Here, the map is engraved by Williams Rogers and includes the arms and portrait of Queen Elizabeth.
No letterpress text is present. Speed's completed work was published in London, but the maps were engraved by Hondius in Amsterdam. Skelton (in the notes to entry 7) records three additional copies of proof impressions, each with varying numbers of maps.
