Biographical / Historical Note
The Fickes family, parents Elizabeth and Jackson and their three sons, moved from Steubenville, Ohio to Iowa in 1856. After the family settled in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Jackson began a brickmaking business.
Summary
Holograph diary. In her diary, Elizbeth Fickes records her family's travel to Iowa, first by steamboat on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and then, after disembarking in Keokuk, Iowa, by coach. After settling in Oskaloosa, Elizabeth writes of family affairs, housework, local events, visits from neighbors, church attendance, local politics, the weather, and her husband's brickmaking business. Accompanied by a typed transcript.
